They lived as modest farmers in a small village called Duault which happened to be the dropzone for operation Sam-West (5th June 1944). This operation consists of dropping French commandos from the SAS in Brittany in order to organise the resistance and slow down German reinforcements heading to the battlefront in Normandy. The response from the Germans happened to be fierce against the locals. On the 21st of August was celebrated a funeral for the victims of a shooting of civilians, killed by the Gestapo in Retaliation. Out of the 29 victims, 14 where from the village where my grand parents lived.
All of this planted the seed for a growing passion about history to the young boy that I was and I was soon dragging my parents, regularly, around the landing sites.
After spending a few years abroad (in Great Britain and Canada), I am really happy to be back to share with you the history of France during the 2nd World War.
